Cebu and Negros provinces fell victim to a powerful and deadly earthquake on February 6th, 2012.
フィリピンのセブとネグロスは2012年2月6日の巨大で致命的な地震の犠牲になりました。
当初のアメリカ地質調査所(USGS)によると、マグニチュード6.7で震源の深さはたったの20kmとのこと。
The Cebu earthquake was rated at 6.7 by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and occurred at depth of only 20km.
その後、情報に若干の修正が加えられているようです。
また2月7日のフィリピンのテレビ局ABS-CBNは被災地区で700回以上の余震を観測し、そのうち最大のものはマグニチュード6.2であったことを伝えています。

“Visayas”「ビサヤ」はセブやネグロス島の地域を指します。人々の言葉も一般的なタガログ語とは少し異なる方言のビサヤ語とよばれる言葉を話す人が多いですね。
フィリピンは東南アジアに位置し、ハリケーンの通り道というイメージをお持ちの方も多いでしょう。しかし実際にはミンダナオ島を台風が直撃、横断するケースは少く、それが逆に今回の被害を大きくした原因とも言われています。被害の大きかったミンダナオ島北部のカガヤンデオロ市長はインタビューで「こんなことは今までなかった」と語り、事前に適切な警報がなかったことを認めています。また、一部の住民は避難指示に従わなかったとも報道されています。 Read the rest of this entry »
